William Hobe’ started Hobe’ Jewelry in 1927 and actually had a hand in the phrase “costume jewelry” itself. One of Hobe’s first assignments was to make costumes and jewelry for the Ziefields Follies. According to historians, Florenz Ziefield described the jewelry that accompanied Hobe’s costumes as
Hobe’s showbiz origins served the company well. By the 1940s and ‘50s, Hollywood stars such is Bette Davis and Ava Gardner were wearing Hobe’. 
Hobe’ is a coveted name for collectors of fine costume jewelry.
