Info on cut steel;

From the 1800s to the early 1900s cut steel was a highly popular material in jewelry manufacture. It sparkled like diamonds, but was less expensive. It catered for a middle class of jewel enthusiast being more costly than paste. Cut steel was a particularly coveted material in French society. When Napoleon's second Empress, Marie-Louise, commissioned sets made out of cut steel, she made it very fashionable. It is highly collectible today!
